Spring Sorbet

This card is "based" on a piece of Crisp Canteloupe cardstock, one of our newest In Colors (also one of my favorites), a piece of the Sweet Sorbet DSP, and then the Scallop tag created from Pool Party and Whisper White cardstock.  I used the Gorgeous Grunge set to create a soft "spotted" background to the tag in Soft Sky (trying to create the feel of a sky behind the flower image).  The flowers, bee, and sentiment are all from the Hello Spring stamp set, and are done with Stampin' Write Markers so you can get all the little details.  I finished this creation off with a piece of the retired Marina Mist organza ribbon that I loved so much from last Spring, and some strategically placed pearls in various sizes around the background piece of DSP.

Golden Celebration

Good Sunday evening Fellow Stampers -

Well, as usual this weekend has gone by way too fast.  My hopes are that you all had a good one; and even found some time to do a little creating.

Tonight I bring you my Pals Paper Arts Challenge #197 card (PPA197). 

This card was made using the new Happy Congratulations stamp set from the 2014 Spring Occasions catalog.  I love this stamp set, but hadn't found the opportunity to use it until now.  I've been so busy trying out everything else -- LOL!  There is so much wonderful stuff in this year's Occasions catalog.  This card centers around a "gold" theme, and can be very versatile for a birthday, a golden wedding anniversary, or a wedding itself.  Let's go to class :-)

• Cut your cardbase 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" from Very Vanilla cardstock.  score at the 4 1/4" mark and carefully fold over, using your bone folder to make a nice crease.  Don't press too hard so as to keep from causing unsightly "cracked" edges on your card.  Using your scoring tool to make your center line makes a nice clean "fold line" and keeps from the possibility of buckling or wrinkling your card when making that fold.  It's an extra step, but one that just makes for such a nice professional touch.
• Cut a piece of Baked Brown Sugar cardstock 1/8" smaller than the front of your cardstock base -  approximately 5 3/8" x 4 1/8".
• Now carefully line up the upper half of your Baked Brown Sugar piece in the new Scallops textured impressions embossing folder so you have about six rows of the scallop on your card (reference the picture above).  Run through your big shot and remove.  Set aside for use in a little bit.

• Now, cut a piece of Very Vanilla 3 5/8" x 2 1/2".  Stamp the lantern "string" several times across the face of the piece of cardstock using Memento Black Tuxedo ink (or Stampin' Up! Basic Black classic ink pad).  Then stamp the little lantern piece with Encore Gold Metallic ink on scrap Very Vanilla pieces.  Punch out with the 3/4" Circle Punch.  Adhere with SNAIL adhesive in various spots across your "string" on the Very Vanilla cardstock.  Using the Summer Starfruit twine from the Sweet Sorbet Accessory kit (SAB 2014 - this is a free item from Sale-a-Bration, and one of the choices you can make with your minimum $50 orders; but only until midnight on Monday, March 31st -- time is almost up!), make little bows and adhere to the tops of each of your "golden" lantern pieces with a glue dot.
• Cut a piece of the new Gold Foil paper 1 7/8" x 3 1/4".

• Now, using the sketch above as a guideline, and the picture of my card, lay out your two pieces (the Very Vanilla and Gold Foil) and determine how you want them to lay on the card front and against each other.  Adhere to the Baked Brown Sugar base, adhering the gold foil first, and then the Very Vanilla piece, with SNAIL adhesive and secure in place.

Now we're going to lay down the Washi Tape:

• Because the Washi Tape overlays your two center pieces, it is important those have been laid down first.  Using the new Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Washi Tape, carefully lay down the striped tape first, side to side on the card, overlapping and covering the edges of the two center pieces as shown.  Trim at each edge of the Baked Brown Sugar cardstock as necessary.  Next use the solid gold washi strip, overlapping it slightly on the stripe washi; then the same with the dots, so that it overlaps the solid gold, and lines up exactly with the bottom edge of the Baked Brown Sugar cardstock.  Trim on the right and left edges to match the cardstock underneath.

• Now, carefully adhere the Baked Brown Sugar decorated piece of cardstock to the front of your Very Vanilla card base using SNAIL adhesive.

• Once you have done that, pick a sentiment of your choice, stamp it using the Encore Gold Metallic ink on a piece of Very Vanilla cardstock, and using your trimmer and your paper snips, create a small banner.  Adhere this to the front of the card in the lower right hand corner using some dimensionals to pop it up.  I picked the "Celebrate" sentiment from the retired 2013 SAB set called Feeling Sentimental.  This allows me to put any type of sentiment on the inside when I'm ready to use the card, such as Happy Birthday, or Good Wishes, or Congratulations.  It's a very versatile sentiment and lends itself to any occasion.

Feeling Sentimental

Hello Fellow Stampers:

Today has been a little bit of a strange day; although a beautiful day in Colorado.  Miss Laredo Mae and I got out for a wonderful walk in the sunshine this afternoon.  I went out for some "shopping therapy" this morning and bought a couple new Spring dresses in attempt to lift my spirits.  It's always nice to have something fresh and new to wear.  So now I've started "spring cleaning" out the closet.  My motto -- if you buy something new, something old has to go!  :-)

Speaking of something old, today I bring you my Mojo Monday challenge card (MOJO338), with a vintage feel. 

Not sure how well the pictures turned out today, but hopefully you can get a feel for this card.  The sketch this week was fun.  A little "askew" and you have a fun take on putting things at an angle.  Let's have a little class time :-)

• First, cut your base cardstock from Whisper White cardstock (8 1/2" x 5 1/2"); score at the 4 1/4" mark and carefully fold over, using your bone folder to make a nice crease.  Don't press too hard so as to keep from causing unsightly "cracked" edges on your card.  Using your scoring tool to make your center line makes a nice clean "fold line" and keeps from the possibility of buckling or wrinkling your card when making that fold.  It's an extra step, but one that just makes for such a nice professional touch.

• Cut a piece of designer series paper of your choice (in this case I used a piece of the lovely Natural Composition Specialty DSP that retired last year), cutting it the same size as your card front (4 1/4" x 5 1/2").  Then angle it across your card front by matching the right-hand upper tip (corner) to the upper right hand corner of the card base and then angling the left-hand side of the cardstock downward, until it meets more or less to the left edge of the base cardstock.  This should create a nice angle across the card, and have some of the DSP hanging off the bottom and right hand sides.  Use your adhesive to adhere the DSP to the base cardstock in the position you decided on, and secure it.  Then flip the card open and from the back side, use your scissors to cut off the excess DSP to match the card base.  This is somewhat "quick and dirty" but I like things easy, rather than over-complicated.  This is an easy way to angle your DSP on the card base and cut it to match the card base beneath it.

 

• We'll come back in a few minutes and do a little sponging, but first let's make our "centerpiece."  For this I used the Circle framelits set.  Stamp your image of choice onto a piece of Whisper White cardstock using Soft Suede classic ink..  Then cut it out with the corresponding circle framelit that works with your image and fits on the front of your card.  Pick one that will allow you to use the next size up to frame the piece and still fit on the card front.  In this case, I cut the next circle frame size up in Baked Brown Sugar.  Adhere your whisper white circle to the baked brown sugar circle with adhesive. 

• Now, take a sponge, and brushing it with baked brown sugar, carefully sponge from the outside in onto your whisper white edges to give a distressed antiqued look.  Don't go onto your image.  And yes, you are also brushing the baked brown sugar circle as you do this; although not readily seen, it gives it a slightly antiqued look as well.  Once you have sponged all the way around your circle, pick up your card base and sponge all the outer white edges to give a distressed antiqued look there as well.  You don't need to sponge on the edges where the DSP meets.

• Once you have completed the sponging, run some adhesive SNAIL on the back of your circle centerpiece and plate it strategically in the center of your DSP on the card front.  Now we're going to make the fun little banners :-)  To make the banners for this particular card, I used the new Banner punch (which is so cute!!), and I also used the coordinating Banner Blast stamp set.  Unfortunately, both of these items are available only as Sale-a-Bration items, and only with a $50 minimum order.  After Monday, you won't be able to get these items anymore!  In this particular case, I punched out 4 banners with the punch from our new Fresh Prints DSP Stack (in the Spring Occasions mini catalog), and then I stamped the "Hi" from the Banner Blast stamp set in Real Red on a piece of Whisper White cardstock and then punched that out.  Once you have done this, line up the five little banners down the side of the DSP on the front of your cardbase, overlapping onto the centerpiece circle.  I popped each of these little banner up with a dimensional to give the card some extra pizzaz.

• For a final finishing touch, small pearls have been set strategically around the outside "edge" of the carousel.  Can you see them ?  :-)  There are 7 - always use an odd number with anything you do in multiple.  This is a lovely final touch to a vintage card. 

This is not a difficult card.  It can be a fun "twist" on a design using almost anything you want to showpiece in the center.  As the Feeling Sentimental set is a retired set from last year's Sale-a-Bration, I would suggest using one of our new flower sets from the Occasions catalog, such as a Peaceful Petals or Happy Watercolor.

Fresh Birthday Greetings!

Good Friday Morning Fellow Stampers -

It's nice to see the end of the week finally here.  Looking forward to a weekend puttering with projects in my studio, and getting caught up around the house.

This simple little card I bring you today was a "quite by accident" card.   I actually was just playing around this last weekend, looking at the some of the new papers from our Fresh Prints designer series paper stack, and realized how good this particular print would look with the Vine Street textured impressions embossing folder from last year's Sale-a-Bration catalog.  So I decided to just play around with a simple design and see what came of it.  You'll notice that I stamped one of the cute "sayings from the new Yippee Skippee stamp set (this is such a fun set) on the Whisper White cardstock using Coastal Cabana ink before I ran it through the Big Shot using the Vine Street TIEF.  

I pulled out another "retired" stamp set that I haven't gotten to use too much - Punch Bunch - which has a cute little "happy birthday" sentiment in it that corresponds with the 1 1/2" scallop square punch that was retired last year as well.   I popped that up with a few dimensionals and added a little Soft Suede taffeta ribbon with a few pearls (always a nice touch), and wah la!!  Sinple, easy and cute!

As much fun as we have with all the new products Stampin' Up! has for us on a consistent basis, I always think it's good to dig back in the stash and pull out some of those older retired items that we tend to forget about.  There are some pretty terrific things that I know each of us has bought over the years that you don't want to lose sight of or forget.  Mix the old with the new and you've got a pretty terrific creation.

I encourage you this weekend to dig into your respective "stashes" and find some of those fun retired items and make something fresh and new with them.  All those great stamp sets and punches might be feeling a little lonely and forgotten :-)
