Happy Hump Day to all!! Today I want to share with you some fun "tricks" and "treats" with the beautiful and fabulous new Spider Web Doilies. I adore these Doilies. They are gorgeous! I think I have enough in stock right now to last a millenium -- LOL. Well, maybe not that long.
I've already found fun ways to use these doilies in the past several weeks in my designs -- See my Bendi Card Design and my recent Paper Players Design where I used this doily in innovative ways. Today, I want to show you some specific "cuts" and "tweaks" you can make to your Spider Web Doilies to use them in so many different ways.
With a little patience, and some careful snipping here and there (fussy cutting), you can come up with so many difference options that can be used in your designs. For example, by snipping out the center, you have an instant fancy doily; snip the center even further in, and you have yet another doily shape, plus a cool circle "framelit."
If you cut sections and stems apart, you can have some fun pieces that would work in many types of artwork pictures and designs. The creativity and options here are endless.
Plus, if you flip your doily over, you have a "white" side that gives another whole round of options. In this picture, I took out a full section of cross lines, and created a "snowflake." So fun!! You can also "spritz" or carefully sponge your white side of the doily to get another color all together.
Yes, this is a delicate item. Handle with care, take your time, take small snips (your Paper Snips are the best for a project like this), and hold the doily supported by your fingers and hand underneath, or lay it flat on a table and let the surface guide your scissors for stability. I found it was not that hard to cut away sections or little connecting pieces if I was just careful and deliberate about what I was doing.
Someone asked recently about cutting the doily "in half." Although you can cut "in half", it is not a true "halfway" mark straight across the doily, mainly because of the delicate detail on either side of the center section. Work carefully eyeing as you go, and don't try to cut down the center of one of the "stems." You will not be able to do it. Cut slightly to one side instead.
I encourage you to just experiment and see what you come up with! Here we go into a new week. I started some Fall cleaning over the weekend; the list is long, so I hope to keep whittling away at it as I enter this week. I think a good deep cleaning is in order, including getting rid of some excess clutter.
I found a wonderful website recently with a suggested checklist for how to go through the house and clear out clutter. Check out "200 Things to Throw Away" HERE -- you might find it helpful too 😊
It's Paper Players [PP264] challenge time -- with a cool sketch to play with. I decided to pull out a new stamp set that I have not had a chance to use just yet. Seemed perfect for this sketch.
Doggone Delightful Stampin' Design Tips:
Layerothology. This cardbase is cut from Basic Black cardstock, 8 1/2" x 5 1/2", scored at 4 1/4". The background layer is Tip Top Taupe cut 1/8" smaller around, and a piece of the Go Wild DSP another 1/8" smaller again. The brown and black color combination for this card seems the perfect ticket.
Technique Tip: Always use a scoring tool to make lines. Don’t just fold by hand. This often results in buckling and wrinkling of the cardstock, depending on its “weight”. A great card deserves a great foundation on which to build. Also, use a Bone Folder to create a crisp edge on all of your folds. But be careful…too much pressure can lead to unsightly “cracked” edges.
Technique Tip: Did you know that there is a right and wrong side to your scored card base? The “bump” formed by the scoring tool goes toward the inside of your card. You’ll notice when you fold inward so the score bump is inside that you get a perfect professional-looking fold and card every single time!
Go Wild! I have been holding this designer paper for a while. In all honesty, it has not been one that necessarily grabbed me or spoke to my preferred aesthetic. It is one of those collections that the more you look at it, the more it grows on you though. When I contemplated using this stamp for today's challenge, I reached for this paper thinking it would be the perfect combination, and I was right! The second layer in this card is another piece from this designer series paper collection, matted with Basic Black. A piece of a Spider Web Doily is placed from the back side on the bottom to emulate the scallops in the sketch.
If the Broom Fits. I just think this is an adorable stamp -- and even better, it's affordable. It's a single stamp "set" if you can call it that. I have "fussy" inked this stamp for today's challenge -- and to do this, I very highly recommend you use your stamp-a-ma-jig. The brooms of choice (there are actually 5 on the stamp itself), were inked with a Tip Top Taupe ink stampin' write marker. The sentiment was inked with a Basic Black stampin' write marker -- first the "If the Broom Fits" portion, lined up with a stamp-a-ma-jig so I could place it right where I wanted it; and then the "Ride It" second, again lined up with a stamp-a-ma-jig. Perfection! The piece is popped with dimensionals. The Burlap ribbon was sort of a happy accident. I went looking for my Burlap ribbon because that was indeed what I wanted to put in that spot; however, I stumbled on this piece in my scrap box already all de-threaded and absolutely the perfect backdrop for my brooms!! Technique Tip: To create this look, clip off the one sealed edge and pull long threads (on the horizontal) to your hearts content 😉 A Gold Basic Metal Button with a little Burlap thread pulled and tied through it, and attached with several glue dots is the perfect classic finishing touch. No pearls today! 😉

How is everyone this fine Saturday? I had meant to get this post up earlier today; but the day just flew by me, so here we are this evening, trying to do a little catchup. It certainly was a busy day for me as I tried to catch up on a bunch of Birthday cards that needed to get in the mail (some belatedly), and other miscellaneous tasks that required a some errand running to get some gift cards, dropping a stamp set I borrowed from another demo back off at her home, a run to the post office, washing the car late this afternoon, and a visit both to Jo-Ann Fabrics and Michael's to take advantage of some fabulous sale deals today on a couple of items.
I am so ready for Fall. Now the forecasters are talking with concern that we may not get a true Fall here this year; rather we may go straight from what appears to be a long lingering hot summer straight into Winter. That would be unfortunate, as Fall can really be so beautiful in Colorado. I hope to make it up to the High Country in the next couple weeks to enjoy some peace and quiet, and the beauty of our turning Aspen trees before it is too late. If Winter should come roaring in all of a sudden, the leaves will come down immediately!
Miss Sadie on Friday morning before going into the Vet Clinic
Today was about patient recuperation for Sadie Ann. We had a rough time when we came home yesterday afternoon from our spay surgery earlier in the morning. I wish there was a better way to communicate with our special fur babies. I wish I could have somehow told her what was coming and helped her prepare for it; I can only imagine the shock to wake up from a deep sleep and find yourself in great pain. I'm upset for her!

Today has been a better day though. My little Sadie Ann has been slowly returning to her old self; which is both good and bad. Good because I didn't like the lethargic, crying little girl I had yesterday. Bad, because now she wants to play, and I can't let her just yet. She has to rest and be still. Which is very difficult for a 5 1/2 month old pup. She's being a good girl though! We have a spot for her on the couch so she can lay here with me while I'm working and playing on the computer.
So, as you know, I recently put up a batch of pickles. I also put up a batch of jelly in the past week or so -- Peach/Orange/Pineapple jelly to be exact. This is once again an old recipe handed down over the generations. I haven't made this particular recipe in a while; with all the good peaches this Summer from the Western Slope, I decided it was time. I thought before I left you today, I'd share our family recipe. I think the age old art of preserving for the cold months is one that should be kept alive. I am also a firm believer that nothing mass produced in our groceries can match what we make at home! The recipe below, by the way, is a big batch. I halved this recipe for my jam making this past weekend.
Peach/Orange/Pineapple Jam
Peel/Pit/slice/chop approximately 18 peaches
Peel/Seed and cut into small pieces approx. 5 oranges
1 large can of crushed pineapple
1 1/2 cups sugar to each cup of fruit (all fruit combined in total)
1 box (2 packages in box) of liquid Certo Pectin
Bring mixture of fruit and sugar to a rolling boil (rolling means you cannot stir it down); cook five minutes, stirring often, until mixture sleets from spoon; add 2 packages of Certo Liquid Pectin. Skim off foam.
Meanwhile, clean/washed jars should be set in baking pans of water (just enough across bottom of pan to cover bottom), and set on burner on low heat. You want the jars to be quite warm for when the hot jelly hits them. Boil lids and rings in water in a pot on the stove. (this is for sanitation -- sanitation is key when putting up and sealing like this).
Pour jelly immediately upon completion into jars, leaving 1/2" head room in each jar. Close with lids and rings; use Boiling-Water Bath method to seal your jars. This is very important - or jam will spoil.
Coming in just a wee bit late this morning. I was so tired last evening and getting a headache, so Miss Sadie and I curled up in bed and fell asleep early. That meant I had to do my Mojo Monday design this morning 😊
Also this morning, Miss Sadie Ann went in for her spay surgery. Needless to say, mom is being a bit nervous, and had to leave quickly before I broke down crying -- eeek! I just hope she comes through this okay and isn't too traumatized.
It's Mojo Monday [MOJO416] challenge time -- are you ready?! 😉 We have a cute sketch today, that I made sort of easy and simple. Let's take a look!
Doggone Delightful Stampin' Design Tips:
Layerothology. This card is cut from Whisper White cardstock, 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored at 4 1/4", turned on the horizontal. The background layers are an Old Olive mat cut 5 3/8" x 4 1/8", and a piece from the beautiful Into the Woods DSP cut 5 1/4" x 4". This background layer is wrapped with a beautiful piece of organza ribbon (contraband), that I snagged at Michael's. Can you believe what a perfect match in color it is? Tells you how well Stampin' Up! does with their color collections to the real world.
Thankful for You. This lovely sentiment is from the Thankful Forest Friends stamp set. I colored this sentiment with stampin' write markers in Tangelo Twist, Blackberry Bliss, Old Olive, Daffodil Delight, and Chocolate Chip, to coordinate with the fussy cut images staged behind it also from the beautiful Into the Woods DSP. This particular paper from that collection is perfect to cut out with a circle punch or with our Circle framelits. I love how you can create focal points straight from the paper. Each of these circles is matted with a Tangelo Twist circle. The center sentiment circle is popped with dimensionals. Now how fun and simple is that!! No time at all to put together a cute card like this. Don't forget this pearls. 😉 (Confession: I almost did -- LOL; was too big a hurry, started taking the pictures, and went, ahhhh, what's wrong with this "picture".)
