Mix-It Up Mondays . . . Relaxing By the Bay

Happy Monday!!  It's the LAST week of March!!  Soooo hard to believe!  We have One Week Left of Sale-A-Bration for 2019, and then it's all over!!  Now is your chance to take advantage of all the wonderful things Sale-A-Bration has to offer.  We'll talk about that in a little bit!!

 

This weekend was a whirlwind for me!  Friday was my "Say Yes to the Dress" moment!  If you're a Kleinfeld Bridal Say Yes to the Dress watcher like I am -- LOL -- you know what I mean.  I had a wonderful appointment with a wonderful bridal salon here in Littleton, and a wonderful entourage with me to have so much fun!  I think we found the "dream dress"; it had better be!!  LOL  I signed the contract and the order has been placed!!!

 

    

Well, now it's on to selecting our venue, the photographer and florist.  This coming Friday we head back down to Colorado Springs to settle a couple of those matters.  In the meantime, we starting to meet with the designer and begin the remodel work on Mike's basement -- a brand new Studio for DDS is in my future!!!  ;-)  LOL

The rest of this week we will focus on Sale-A-Bration!!!  There are still wonderful things to snap up and some important things to consider before these opportunities are gone, so let's get started!!!

 

Today I'm featuring one of my favorite "coloring" Sale-A-Bration stamp sets - By the Bay!  This set is just lovely, and affords wonderful opportunities for coloring with blender pens or watercolor pencils.  It gave me a wonderful evening coloring while watching "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" -- LOL.  Honestly, so relaxing and just enjoyable.  I thought of "Sarah, Plain & Tall" while coloring this wonderful image and how she talks of her home by the seashore in Maine, and what the colors of the sea were - blues, and greens and grays!  So you will see that incorporated in today's card design!

 

The main focal image from the stamp set is stamped in Staz-On Jet Black ink on Shimmery White cardstock.  Whenever watercoloring or using a blender pen, be sure to use this ink to keep it from "running."  The Shimmery White cardstock is perfect for watercoloring (especially with a blender pen), and holds up well to repeated moisture as you work color.  I also love the added shimmer in the paper.

 

I did indeed use a Blender Pen today, and the following ink colors for my image:  Balmy Blue, Soft Sea Foam, Old Olive, Crumb Cake, Soft Suede, Calypso Coral, Gray Granite and Smoky Slate.  I used this combination of colors across the entire image, working the houses in Gray Granite and Soft Suede/Crumb Cake shading, and adding the Calypso Coral on the bricks for a surprise pop of color.  The Soft Sea Foam and Balmy Blue were worked into the water and shading around the images as well as the sky.  I might try Pool Party instead next time as Balmy Blue can seem a bit bright.  Overall, I really love how this came out.

 

Out come the wonderful Rectangle Stitched Framelits to crop this image to just the right size, and layer it against a piece of Soft Sea Foam cardstock.  The card base is Gray Granite, with a mat background from Pool Party embossed with the Seaside Textured Impressions Embossing Folder.  I used the "debossed" side and I love the way that looks with the "waves" in the background.

 

Then I added a piece of Whisper White 5/8" Flax Ribbon on the diagonal behind the matted centerpiece before popping it up with Dimensionals in the center of the card front.  Have you forgotten about this wonderful ribbon??  Page 35 of your Spring Occasions Catalog!!  It is the absolutely perfect texture and feel for this seaside card!  You could even separate and fray the ends for a different effect if you wanted.

I finished everything off with the Frosted & Clear Epoxy Droplets from the 2018 Holiday Occasions Catalog.  Did you realize that these wonderful embellishments carried forward and are still available?? [Item #147801]  I am so glad because these are some of my favorite embellishments and are perfect for this card!!

 

Finally, this set has the perfect image and sentiment to finish off the inside of my card -- oh I adore these little sea birds!!!

Case-Out Thursdays ~ The CASE of the Dancing Butterflies . . .

Hello Fellow Stampers ~

A couple of weeks ago I held my Spring ASE's class (Advanced Stampin' Experts), and we focused on using Vellum in your card designs and crafting.  Vellum is so versatile and can change the look of your design so quickly, creating elegance, or and overlay to soften harsh/bright colors, or extra "texture" to layering and chabby chic designs.  If you have been paying attention, Vellum is all over everything this Spring, and it is so much fun!!

 

Today we are CASEing a wonderful card from the 2019 Spring Occasions Catalog, featuring the Beauty Abounds bundle, and a watercolor technique besides!!  How fun is that!?!

"CASE-Out" Design Guide

1. Cut and score your 4-1/4" x 11" (score @ 5-1/2") Thick Whisper White cardstock, gently burnishing on the score line with your bone folder.

2.  Cut a piece of Shimmery White cardstock, 5-3/8" x 4-1/8".

3.  Using an ink well or paint palette, drop several drops of each of the listed Re-Inkers.  Using an AquaPainter, add plain water across your Shimmery White cardstock front, and add water to each of your re-inker colors; mix well, and pick up a little color with your AquaPainter and begin spreading from the top left to the lower right, in this order of color:  Grapefruit Grove, Petal Pink, Daffodil Delight, Lemon Lime Twist, Old Olive, Coastal Cabana, Pacific Point.  Technique Tip:  I like to tell my classes that there is no right or wrong way for "free" watercoloring, and that every single piece will turn out different every time.  Don't be constrained by what you see in the sample - just play with it and have fun.  You are creating a "rainbow" graduating down from the top left-hand corner to the lower right-hand corner.  Technique Tip:  Use the tip of your Paper Piercing Tool or your Take Your Pick Tool to hold down the cardstock while you are "painting."  This will keep your fingers out of the mess and help keep the cardstock from curling while you work.   Set finished piece aside to dry!

4.  From your coordinating cardstock colors (to the Re-Inkers) using the "teeny tiny" butterflies in the Butterfly Beauty Thinlits Dies, cut approximately 5 of each color cardstock (to coordinate with your re-inkers).  Because there are multiple dies for the "teeny tiny" butterflies in this set, you can cut all of them at once from each cardstock color.

5.  Stamp the "Our Friendship . . ." sentiment from the Beauty Abounds stamp set using Jet Black Staz-On ink on your piece of Vellum cardstock.  Cut out the sentiment using the largest straight-edged Oval from the Layering Ovals Framelits.

6.  Once your Shimmery White cardstock is dry, attach it to the front of your card base being generous with your SNAIL.  NOTE:  Watercolored paper has a tendency to curl and pull away, so use plenty of SNAIL to hold it down.

7.  Scatter your cut-out butterflies across each section of coordinated color - i.e., Grapefruit Grove butterflies onto the Grapefruit Grove watercolor section; Petal Pink butteflies on the Petal Pink watercolor section, etc.  Place a butterfly on a glue dot, and then onto the card front where it belongs.  Then take the pointy end of your Take Your Pick Tool, and just gently nudge any extra glue dot showing under the butterfly.  Three to four butterflies to each color section, scatter in different directions around the outside edges (not in the center), so that they will show around where your Vellum Oval will sit.

8.  Using a couple of glue dots, place them strategically on the back side of your Vellum Oval behind letters/words where they won't be easily seen; then attach to the center of your card front.

9.  Tie a bow out of the Silver & Petal Pinks Baker's Twine, then attach to the lower right of your Vellum Oval with a glue dot.

10.  Cut a piece of Petal Pink cardstock, 4-1/8" x 5-3/8"; and a piece of Whisper White cardstock 4" x 5-1/8".  Mat them together and put them on the inside of your card.  Decorate as you wish.  Make a pretty envelope!  You're done !

 

Wasn't that fun?  This is one of my favorite cards recently!  I love the look of the Vellum over the watercolored background; and I adore all the little butterflies!  Are we really allowed to have this much fun making cards??  LOL

"Spring Has Sprung" ~~ March 2019 Stampin' Pretty Pals Blog Hop

Good Morning Fellow Stampers ~

We've arrived at the 2nd Wednesday of March ~~ and that can mean only one thing!  It's time for the Stampin' Pretty Pals monthly blog hop!  Yeah!!

So welcome to the Pals’ March blog hop.  I am SO glad you’ve stopped in for a visit today, because "Spring Has Sprung" (or maybe in our deepest wishful thinking - since it's blizzarding outside today -- LOL).  Are you getting as antsy for Spring as I am??  I'm starting to get pretty tired of the cold, the dull gray outside, and the never ending snowstorms that keep passing thru - LOL.  So, we're off to brighten up our homes and our mailboxes with a whiff of Spring!

Today we're going to play with a "Stair Step Fancy Fold" card -- made specifically to showcase my wonderful Spring Rose Trellis - LOL  I just recently discovered this fancy fold which has been around for awhile actually.  And I really enjoyed playing and creating this little masterpiece.

I cut this card out of Petal Pink cardstock, and then set my squares to showcase the gorgeous vellum from the Floral Romance Specialty Designer Series Paper.  Then I cut the detailed rose out of the Rose Trellis Thinlits Dies using Grapefruit Grove Foil, and the trellis out of the same set of dies from So Saffron cardstock.  It was all the little fun details I added that makes this card so much fun!!

I included butterflies, cut from Lovely Lipstick Foil, and leaves and stems from the Rose Trellis and Butterfly Beauty Thinlits die sets.

The wonderful sentiment is from the Strong & Beautiful stamp set -- you MUST give this sentiment set a second look if you've skipped it!!

I LOVE this framelit used to cut the sentiment from the Rose Trellis dies. 

 

The back of this special card holds the spot for your additional message and sentiments.

Keep in mind that this card, when laid flat, does NOT fit in a regular envelope.  You must use your wonderful Envelope Punch Board to create a 6" x 4-1/2" envelope.

Yeah!

 

You can find some good videos out on the internet to "step" you through how to make a Stair Step card.  Here are a few basics:

 

Cut your piece of cardstock 4-1/8" x 11"

Score on the short side at 1-3/8" and 2-3/4"

Then down the long side at 1-3/8", 2-3/4", 4-1/8", 5-1/2", 6-7/8", 8-1/4" & 9-5/8"

Then count in from one end, square 1, square 2, and cut out square's 3, 4, & 5; and square 4 in the 2nd row as a "T" shape.  Keep it in a "T" shape - it will be much easier!!

Then use the bottom row of squares to cut a 1" strip and score at 1/2".

You're going to use this piece to close the bottom of your Stair Step Card.
